SHS Social Accountability

Social Accountability Budget

Samaritan Health Services supports dozens of community health initiatives through its Social Accountability Budget (SAB).

Each year, Samaritan gives 10 percent of its net revenue to the budget, which is then distributed as grants to local non-profits and public health efforts. A committee based at each hospital invites and then reviews proposals submitted by local organizations. Funded programs are health-related, collaborative in nature, focus on prevention, and are designed to address the needs of underserved populations. Awards are announced each spring.

In 2006, 35 local non-profit organizations in Benton, Linn, and Lincoln counties received grants totaling $200,000 through the Social Accountability Budget. Grant recipients included:

To be eligible for funding from the Social Accountability Budget, programs must:

  • Focus on unmet needs in underserved populations;
  • Be collaborative, involving partnerships with other organizations;
  • Focus on improving the health status in the community;
  • Use quality indicators to measure progress and outcomes, reporting results and sharing them widely to attract more resources;
  • Plan for self-sufficiency where appropriate; and
  • Operate efficiently, ideally with an administrative overhead of 15 percent or less.
