Samaritan Western Scramble raises $50,000 for new medical school

Jul 27,2010
The first-ever Samaritan Western Scramble was a huge success, raising $50,000 for the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) Northwest.

A total of 108 golfers in 27 foursomes participated in the July 19 tournament at Mallard Creek Golf Course in Lebanon. The proceeds will benefit the operations of COMP Northwest, which is set to be the first medical school to open in Oregon in a century.

Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) of Pomona, Calif., will operate the school as part of the Samaritan Health Sciences Campus across from Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

Dr. Larry Mullins, DHA, President and CEO of Samaritan Health Services, presented a $50,000 check to Clinton Adams, DO, Dean of WesternU, and Paula Crone, DO, executive associate dean of COMP Northwest, at the end of the tournament.

“By all measures, this was a successful tournament. We are both honored and thankful for Samaritan’s support,” Crone remarked.

“The success of this golf tournament was yet another reminder of the potential strength of our partnership with Western University. Our goal, to recruit and retain highly skilled and talented physicians here in Lebanon and throughout the state of Oregon, inches closer to reality by the day,” Mullins said.

In first place, with a gross score of 59, Rick, Gene and Casey Primasing along with Dave Abresch, each took home a $100 gift certificate to Mallard Creek.

Better than average play earned Brian Vandetta, Bob Speaker, Tre Kennedy and Doug Phillips of Udell Engineering and Land Surveying first place net with a 50, or 22 under par.

In all, players received more than $3,000 in cash prizes and other giveaways.

The Lebanon Community Hospital Foundation hosted the tournament, with primary sponsorship coming from Central Willamette Community Credit Union.
