Diet tips that may make a big difference Tired of trying to do a major overhaul of your diet? Sometimes, you can make small changes that can have a big impact, and often with better success. Altering how you shop is one way to create big results for better nutrition. Something as simple as planning your shopping trips can help you cut calories and bad fats from your diet, as well as help you organize your week.

“Planning helps people keep track of their calories and what foods they are giving themselves and their families,” Registered Dietitian Barbara George said.

Follow some of these easy tips to help make your diet fresh and healthy: 

  • Choose fresh fruits, vegetables and other foods. Shelf stable and packaged foods tend to have more processed sugar and less nutritional value.
  • Choose whole grain for the most vitamins and nutrients in your diet. Whole grains are also a better source of fiber which can help you feel full longer. 
  • Follow the 90/10 rule. Choose foods and plan meals that are healthy and follow your plan 90 percent of the time. Make sure to indulge yourself 10 percent of the time so you don’t feel deprived. 
  • Plan your menu. Not only will this save you money and time, but it will also save you calories. Knowing what you are going to make helps keep you organized and on track to meet your diet goals.
  • Get educated! Read food labels to learn important information about what you are eating, such as serving sizes, ingredients and nutritional values. Keep track of what you buy.
  • Start your day off right. Twenty percent of your daily calories should be used for breakfast, the most important meal. It’s important to note how you feel after each meal, and to get your energy going early. 
  • Get moving! Everyone needs 30 to 60 minutes of exercise five to seven days a week. Think you don’t have time? Take a 10-minute walk at lunch time or take the stairs.

These simple steps are easy to take and will have a big impact on your health.
