Thinking about a career in healthcare? Consider these scholarships.

Feb 2,2010

Are you from East Linn County, and you're pursuing a health career-related degree? You might be eligible for three scholarships offered by the Lebanon Community Hospital Foundation and Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Auxiliary.

The Auxiliary offers five $1,000 scholarships each year to East Linn County students who are pursuing a career in a health care-related field. The hospital foundation administers the Frank Girod, MD Scholarship for medical students and the Rachel Easton, RN Scholarship for nursing students.

Deadline approaching for Auxiliary scholarship

Applications for the Auxiliary scholarships must be received by Friday, Feb. 26. The Auxiliary will award the scholarships in early spring. Previous scholars have pursued careers in a variety of fields, from nursing to physical therapy.

Students must be attending classes in their program when they apply. For more information, call Roxie Snyder, volunteer services manager, at (541) 451-7062.

Girod scholars practice across the country

Medical school students from East Linn County are eligible for the Girod Scholarship, which can range from $1,500 to $8,000. This scholarship is named for the late Frank Girod, MD, a primary care physician who was instrumental in the establishment of Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

Previous Girod scholars are now working across the country, from Hawaii to New York. Last year’s scholar, Ross Wopat, son of Dr. Rick and Ellen Wopat of Lebanon, is studying medicine at the Keck School of Medicine through the University of Southern California.

Applicants must submit an application, available from the foundation office at the hospital, as well as a written statement about their goals and any community service involvement. Deadline to apply is April 30, and scholars will be announced by June 1.

All East Linn nursing students eligible for Easton

Any East Linn County student who is accepted in a nursing program is eligible for the Easton Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship is named for Rachel Easton, who was a longtime nurse at the Samaritan Park Street Clinic in Lebanon.

All applicants must submit an official transcript including fall 2009 grades, a one- or two-page typed statement discussing why you are pursuing a nursing degree and listing your goals; a completed application form and a cost and resource estimate work sheet; any special circumstances you might like the Easton Scholarship Committee to consider; and a signed and dated letter of recommendation from someone who knows you well.

As with the Girod scholarship, deadline to apply for the Easton scholarship is April 30. Scholars will be announced by June 1.
