Toni Yancey MD, MPH, author of the book “Instant Recess: Building a Fit Nation 10 Minutes at a Time,” will be the keynote speaker at the Third Annual Coast to the Cascades Childhood Obesity Summit on Monday, May 9, in Lebanon.
The Coast to the Cascades Community Wellness Network will host the summit at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, 525 N. Santiam Hwy., starting at 11 a.m. Network members include Samaritan Health Services, the Cascades West Council of Governments, Community Outreach Inc., Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians, Oregon State University and the health departments of Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties.
Participants will also hear from Katrina Wiest, a wellness specialist from the Bend-LaPine School District, who has developed several healthy eating initiatives within that district.
JoAnn Miller, community benefit director for Samaritan Health Services, said the summit focus will be a call to action for implementation of activities that the network has planned to combat childhood obesity in the region. Planning has taken place over the last two years with the help of a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to combat childhood obesity.
The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required as space is limited. To register, call (541) 451-6939.
