Local organizations step up to support cancer resource center

Nov 18,2009
More than $2,000 was raised this October by a South Albany High School senior and the Human Bean for the Samaritan Albany Cancer Resource Center.

Callie Durst, a South Albany senior, was looking to make an impact in her community during her last year of high school. So she borrowed an idea from the OSU volleyball team – a Pink Out. Specialty t-shirts were sold, the team wore pink uniforms, donation booths were set up and individual player sponsors and donations from the crowd helped bring the total up to $1,300.
Because of the success, the South Albany High School volleyball team is thinking about doing the fundraiser again next year.

The Human Bean helped cap off the $2,000 total with their “Coffee for a Cure” event held on Friday, Oct. 23. For their fundraiser, “Coffee for a Cure” donated 50 percent of their sales that day to the Samaritan Albany Cancer Resource Center. Those sales, in combination with personal customer donations, $711.

“We feel so fortunate to have community members that have a passion for partnering with us,” Kimberly Christensen, Director of Imaging at Samaritan Albany General Hospital said. “We can’t thank them enough for their generosity towards our organization.”

All proceeds from these organizations go to benefit education and support around women’s cancer issues.
