Samaritan furthers commitment to medical education, welcomes first class of resident physicians

Jun 21,2009

After much planning, preparation and hard work, Samaritan Health Services’ first class of resident physicians begin training on June 22. Within this founding group, there are three individuals specializing in family practice, four in internal medicine and four in psychiatry. The residents are coming to Samaritan Health Services from all over the country – Michigan, Illinois, Arizona, California, Missouri and right here in Oregon.

While at Samaritan Health Services, the residents will adhere to curricula developed by the American Osteopathic Association and its specialty colleges. The curricula have been carefully reviewed by Samaritan’s program directors and graduate medical education committee and then modified to meet the needs of our communities.

Residents will rotate through month-long clinical experiences in areas such as the hospitalist program, psychiatry, surgery, obstetrics and pediatrics – all dependent on the specialty of medicine they are studying. In addition to the clinical experiences, residents will participate daily in structured didactics – a program that includes morning report, grand rounds, morbidity & mortality conference, board review and journal club.

An example of day in the life of a resident on the internal medicine inpatient service:

  • 6:30 a.m. Preround on assigned patients
  • 7 a.m. Sign out
  • 7:45 a.m. Morning report
  • 8:15 a.m. Work rounds
  • 10:15 a.m. Radiology rounds
  • 10:45 a.m. Attending rounds
  • 12:30 p.m. Noon conference
  • 1:30 p.m. Admissions or outpatient clinic
  • 6:30 p.m. Sign out

The matriculation of residents marks just another step Samaritan Health Services is taking to increase its commitment to medical education. Resident training brings an exceptional value to our medical community and it is anticipated that many residents will remain in the area following their training — helping Samaritan Health Services provide more access, expertise and quality health care to our communities.
