Workshop to benefit caregivers will be offered in two sessions in 2010
Jan 18,2010
Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a free six-week workshop to help caregivers learn to take care of themselves, will be offered at Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital. The first session will be held on Thursdays starting April 1 through May 6 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The second will also be on Thursdays starting Oct. 7 through Nov. 11 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
The workshop equips participants to better handle the physical and emotional demands of being a caregiver. Offering practical and emotional tools that work, the workshop will teach caregivers or those who anticipate becoming a caregiver how to handle the often troubling family dynamics surrounding caregiving, how to discern when outside help is required, how to access respite care, and practical solutions for many issues common to caregivers and care recipients.
“This workshop is for the caregiver and teaches them to take care of themselves,” said Carol Seeley, RN. Seeley, a parish nurse and the parish nurse coordinator for north Lincoln County, has been working with caregivers for many years.
“Powerful Tools helps people become the kind of caregivers they want to be and teaches them how to not feel guilty about taking care of themselves,” said Seeley. “I have seen Powerful Tools have an incredible effect on caregivers. Not only will the caregiver benefit, but so will their loved one that they are caring for.” Anyone caring for a parent, spouse, friend, someone in a nursing home or someone with a chronic medical condition is welcome to attend.
The six-week workshop is free and will be held in MOB5 at Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital, 2930 West Devils Lake Rd. There is a suggested $25 donation to defray the cost of the class book, but it is not required in order to attend the class. Call (541) 996-7298 to register by March 29.
