Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Program

Samaritan Health Services works with grants from the Centers for Disease Control and the Susan G. Komen Foundation to facilitate breast and cervical cancer screenings and other preventive health checks for uninsured and underinsured women in Benton and Lincoln counties who typically rarely or never get screened for such diseases.

Samaritan’s role is providing support for the case manager, Laura Dickison, who travels between the counties to identify and help women who qualify (based on age, income and insurance status) for the health services. During the 2005-2006 year, Dickison helped 278 women from both counties with CDC funds and another 20 women with Komen funds.

Dickison, an emergency medical technician with 10 years experience as a 911 operator, uses fliers, educational programs at hospital and community sites, and participation at health fairs (such as the Wal-Mart wellness clinic) to alert women to the services available to them. Her quest is to reach women, generally 40 to 65 years of age, whose incomes are 250 percent over the poverty level.

Once a woman is identified as eligible for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program, she receives a packet of information, including health and privacy information, and a mammogram voucher. She also receives a preliminary wellness check from her own health care provider or one referred to her through the program.

For more information about the program: call Dickison at (541) 574-4789, or toll-free (888) 374-8911. Or, call the statewide program number at 800-4-CANCER.
