Coordinating Local Emergency Preparedness

In Benton, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Polk, and Yamhill counties, Samaritan Health Services (SHS) is serving as the lead agency to coordinate the development of a Regional Medical Surge Response Plan. To date approximately $3,500,000 in federal emergency preparedness funds have been distributed to hospitals, emergency medical services, and tribes within the region to purchase additional disaster supplies and equipment. There are seven designated Healthcare Preparedness regions in the State of Oregon. The Oregon Department of Human Services, Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program, manages the program at the State level.

With funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (US HHS), the program was initiated in 2004 in Oregon and is congressionally allocated to run through at least 2011. SHS has hired a coordinator to work with local agencies to develop a plan that is collaborative and cooperative. The plan will include information and recommendations on hospital bed capacity, vaccine and medication supplies, information and communication systems, decontamination and personal protection equipment, mental health services, and the coordination of training and exercises.
