SHS Hospital Foundations
Each of the five Samaritan Health Services hospitals has worked with members of the community to establish a charitable, tax-exempt foundation to help raise and administer funds for hospital programs. Each of the foundations pursues an agenda that meets the particular needs of its community and each foundation’s Board of Trustees is made up of local community members.
The fund-raising events of the foundations bolster the services of each hospital and each local community. For example, through its holiday gala in 2004, the Albany General Hospital Foundation was able to generate more than $50,000. The foundation gave the money to the local InReach Clinic, a free weekly clinic for uninsured working families. Staffed by physicians and other clinicians who volunteer their time, the clinic provides diagnostic and healing services to people in need.
In all, individuals, businesses, and foundations contributed approximately $3 million to SHS-affiliated hospital foundations in 2003. Their gifts supported efforts including:
- Mario Pastega House (Corvallis) – a comfortable “home away from home” offering 12 fully-furnished guest rooms and amenities for out-of-area patients and families traveling to Corvallis for medical care.
- Health Career and Training Center (Lebanon) – flexible classroom and laboratory space on the hospital campus that allows health occupation students to receive classroom and clinical education in one convenient location.
- Medication Assistance Program (all sites) – provides prescription medications to low income individuals.
- Hospice care (Albany, Corvallis, Lebanon, Newport, Lincoln City).
- Scholarships for students pursuing health occupations (Albany, Lebanon).
- Cancer care, including mammogram screenings for low income women (all sites).
- Emergency and trauma equipment and care (all sites).
