Health Care (non-professional) Training
In addition to the extensive training SHS offers to nurses and other professionals, SHS also sponsors or facilitates health-care-related training sessions for a variety of compassionate care outreaches. For example:
- Samaritan hospital provides classes to train hospice volunteers, who will serve the needs of terminal patients.
- Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital sponsors a “No One Dies Alone” program, through which volunteers are counseled in caring for the dying during their last days in the hospital.
- Both in the valley and on the coast, Samaritan Health Services is training retired and other nurses to serve in parish nurse programs. The programs are designed to increase the base of medical volunteers in SHS communities. It utilizes existing nursing resources and builds on community interest to create collaborations between hospital and faith communities. SHS uses its own resources in parish nurse training and collaborates with funding agencies such as the Collins Foundation to further the aims and reach of parish nursing.
- Samaritan Health Services trains seniors to serve as companions to other less-mobile and more-frail seniors through the Senior Companion Program. SHS collaborates with other national and local agencies in administering this program in Benton, Lincoln, and Linn counties.
