Scholarships

Samaritan Health Services offers a number of scholarship opportunities to encourage and facilitate local students’ education in health care fields. The scholarships, often administered through the foundations or auxiliaries of SHS hospitals, make it possible for local people to enter fulfilling careers and help build healthier communities.

Dr. Larry Mullins Endowed Scholarship for Health Care Administration

The Larry A. Mullins, DHA, Scholarship was established in 2003 by the board of directors of Samaritan Health Services, Corvallis, Oregon. It was formed in honor of Dr. Mullins, the President/CEO of Samaritan Health Services, upon the completion of his doctoral degree in health care administration (DHA) from the Medical University of South Carolina.

The scholarship is open to those pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in health care administration or a related field, such as public health, and who are enrolled in Linn-Benton Community College in Oregon, Oregon State University, or Northern Arizona University.

The scholarship fund is housed with the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation in Corvallis. Dr. Mullins chairs the selection committee for the scholarship. At least one scholarship of $1,000 is awarded annually from the fund.

For more information about the Mullins scholarship, or to download guidelines and application, visit the Mullins scholarship page.

Frank Girod, M.D. Medical Scholarship

The Girod scholarship honors a well-respected physician who served east Linn County for almost 50 years. It is administered through the Lebanon Community Hospital Foundation and is awarded annually to one or more east Linn County residents pursuing their own medical studies.

For more information about the scholarship, or for an application, contact the foundation office at (541) 451-7063, or visit the Girod scholarship page.

Samaritan Albany General Hospital Auxiliary Scholarships

Each spring, the Samaritan Albany General Hospital Auxiliary grants scholarships to local high school graduating seniors, college students, and Albany-area Samaritan Health Services employees who are beginning or continuing their educations in the field of human medicine. The scholarships are funded through sales at the hospital’s gift shop run by the auxiliary and from other donations earmarked for this cause.

Scholarship awards are paid directly to the recipients’ universities or colleges to help with tuition, program-required books, and program-required supplies. In 2005, the auxiliary distributed a total of $30,650 to educational institutions in the name of scholarship recipients—15 students and eight Samaritan employees.

For more information about the scholarship guidelines, or to obtain an application, contact Auxiliary Manager Suzette Boydston, (541) 812-4185.

Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Auxiliary Virginia Welch Scholarship

Each year, the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Auxiliary awards scholarships to men and women who plan to pursue a career in a medically related field in a hospital setting. The scholarship helps defray tuition, fees, and textbook costs.

The number and amount of each year’s awards are determined by the revenue the auxiliary receives from its fund-raising and sales events, and according to other commitments and gifts the auxiliary gives to other hospital endeavors. In 2004, for example, the auxiliary awarded 12 scholarships each in the amount of $500. In 2005, the auxiliary awarded 15 scholarships of $650 each. For more information about the Virginia Welch Scholarship, contact the Volunteer Services Director, (541) 768-5083.
