Low cost medical clinics
Supporting low cost clinics helps Samaritan reach out to everyone. Our mission is to reach out to everyone who needs health care, no matter the person’s income or insurance status. That’s why we support three area low-cost clinics: one in Benton County (Corvallis) in which we work with Community Outreach to provide administrative services, and two in Linn County (Albany and Lebanon).
Samaritan physicians, nurses and other staff consistently volunteer their time; and Samaritan hospitals donate lab equipment, lab test services, X-ray exams and prescriptions to keep the clinics running. In addition, we fill thousands of free prescriptions, valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. In 2007, for example, Samaritan pharmacies filled 4925 prescriptions for Benton County’s Community Outreach, Inc.; and it filled 2232 prescriptions for Linn County’s InReach Clinic.
Other Samaritan-related entities, such as the hospital foundations, also help in these efforts. For example, in 2008, the Albany General Hospital Foundation awarded $55,000 to Albany’s InReach Clinic. The money came from various fundraising activities, including the foundation’s annual Winter Gala.
The Albany General Hospital Foundation funds about one third of the InReach Clinic’s total operating costs and works to expand the clinic’s scope. In 2008, the foundation supported the hiring of a nurse practitioner who now serves as full-time coordinator of Albany InReach Services. Also, InReach Services was able to collaborate with Medical Teams International and the Tooth Taxi to provide free dental services for low-income residents.
