SHS-Affiliated Hospital FoundationsPhilanthropy, which is defined as “affection for mankind, especially as manifested in donations of money or property,” has played a crucial role in the histories of each hospital affiliated with Samaritan Health Services (SHS). Indeed, the generosity of caring people in each of the SHS communities has enabled the hospitals to offer incredibly diverse and far-reaching health care services, ranging from diagnostic screenings to community clinics to construction of high-tech cardiology and cancer centers. Just a brief sampling of SHS services and projects supported by local generosity includes:
SHS-foundations secure, manage charitable giftsSo that all financial gifts are managed efficiently and provide the maximum benefit, each hospital within the SHS network has a charitable foundation that works to meet the particular health care needs of its community. Each foundation is a 501(C)(3) charitable, tax-exempt institution. Each is overseen by a board of trustees composed of local community citizens. The foundations collaborate on some fund-raising activities and support a central office for gift acknowledgement, accounting, donor recognition, prospect research and other system-wide activities. How the foundations facilitate philanthropyFoundation staff include some who have earned national certification (CFRE) in fund raising, and all participate in ongoing continuing education and professional development activities. Further, they work with in-house finance staff, investment professionals and their boards of trustees (many members of which are financial professionals in their own right). The result of all this expertise-sharing is solid, efficient financial management and effective stewardship of gifts. Among the services SHS-affiliated foundations provide are:
Current and ongoing projectsEach of the hospital foundations works with its local hospital and community to identify priority projects for foundation funding. The individual communities also may work together on funding for regional projects, such as the Mario Pastega Guest House in Corvallis or the Health Career Center in Lebanon. Some foundation initiatives are quite dramatic and generate much anticipation and excitement. Others, such as medical scholarships and equipment purchases are less noticeable, perhaps, but extremely valuable to the persons and communities who benefit from them. Among the more dramatic current projects wholly funded or supplemented with foundation funds are the Ralph Hull Regional Heart Center and the Mario Pastega House on the campus of Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis and the Health Career Center on the campus of Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital. Ongoing projects at various hospital campuses include the InReach Clinic at Samaritan Albany General Hospital , the cardiac rehabilitation program and women’s cancer fund at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport, and Lifeline scholarships at North Lincoln Hospital Foundation in Lincoln City. How you can helpThere are literally hundreds of health care projects within SHS communities that could benefit from your financial gift. It’s possible that a particular project, such as hospice care or clinic care to low-income families, is dear to your heart. Or, you may have a personal reason for wanting excellent heart or cancer care available to people in your community. Whatever your personal reasons for giving, foundation staff would be honored to work with you in providing compassionate, excellent health care for you, your loved ones and your community.
