 Quality of Care

Clinical Performance Data

All SHS-affiliated hospitals collect and report clinical performance data as required by The Joint Commission. We support the release of quality information to the public as a means of educating our communities and raising the bar for medical performance.

By visiting www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov you can obtain information on quality measures for some common conditions that hospitals treat. These conditions are heart attack, heart failure, and pneumonia. There are evidence-based measures for each condition that have been proven to ensure the best outcomes for patients. For example, giving a patient who is suffering a heart attack an aspirin has been shown to improve the outcome of that patient. Therefore, the administering of aspirin to patients with this condition is recommended and hospitals are rated on this activity. The goal would be for a hospital to give aspirin to heart attack patients in 100 percent of cases.

The Hospital Compare Web site is interactive and allows you to search for the specific information and hospitals you are interested in. There are also understandable definitions of each quality measure. It is the goal of SHS to reach 100 percent for every measure.

We recommend that you use this information to start conversations with your physician and other clinical caregivers. (Please note the SHS data reported on Hospital Compare is approximately six months behind.)

SHS is proud of its collaborative environment, which enables hospitals, clinics and physicians to share best practices for meeting quality measures. The nature of the SHS network of health care entities allows for patient-centered efforts and practices to continually be reviewed and improved.
