Jana Kay Slater, PhD

The Center for Health Research & Quality is under the direction of Dr. Slater. In addition to providing administrative leadership, Dr. Slater advances internal and collaborative research and evaluation through capacity building and strengthening partnerships with external entities. Dr. Slater’s interests include research and evaluation of health promotion and disease prevention programs aimed at low-income and underserved children, adolescents, and families. She has had more than 25 years of experience conducting research and translating findings into policies and practices aimed at improving individual and community health and well-being. Dr. Slater has taught graduate courses in applied research methods at the University of California, Davis, and California State University, Sacramento. She has published more than 20 articles in professional journals, and is coeditor of two books, Foundations and Evaluation: Contexts and Practices for Effective Philanthropy (2004), and Advances in Survey Research (1996). She received her PhD in Applied Experimental Psychology from Southern Illinois University.
Bill Origer, MD

As Medical Director of the Center, Dr. Origer provides oversight for clinical trial research and the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Dr. Origer attended the University of Nebraska where he earned his undergraduate and medical degrees. He completed a family practice residency with University of Utah affiliated hospitals in 1976. Dr. Origer was a full-time practicing family physician in Albany for 20 years. He has spent the last 11 years in medical administration, serving as Medical Director for FirstCare Physicians, Samaritan Health Physicians and Samaritan Health Plans. Dr. Origer also practices part time in Urgent Care, supervises hospital case managers, and teaches medical students. He is committed to the concept of evidence-based medicine, which uses the results of medical research to guide clinical decisions. Dr. Origer is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice and the American College of Physician Executives.
Nancy Keuneke, MS, CPHQ, RN

Ms. Keuneke directs Samaritan Health Services’ internal quality improvement research related to patient care, patient safety, and patient satisfaction. In 1978, Ms. Keuneke graduated with a diploma in nursing from Tacoma General Hospital School of Nursing. While working full-time in emergency nursing in Yakima, WA, she obtained her BSN from the Intercollegiate School of Nursing program, affiliated with Washington State University. In 1985 she moved to Corvallis, OR and worked full-time in nursing at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center (GSRMC) continuing to specialize in emergency nursing and then changed to IV Therapy. In 1992, she graduated from Oregon Health & Science University with a Masters of Science in Nursing after co-submitting a thesis on the accuracy of tympanic thermometers in hospitalized adults. That same year she was hired as the first quality professional for GSRMC. Ms. Keuneke has served in various leadership positions in the Oregon Association of Healthcare Quality (Secretary, Treasurer, and President). She maintains certification in her area of expertise, Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality.
