Nurse Assistant Training Program

The Nurse Assistant Training Program of Samaritan Health Services

The SHS Nurse Assistant Training Program is a 160-hour course fulfilling the Oregon State Board of Nursing requirements for nursing assistant training. Combining classroom time and skills labs with hands-on clinical experience, this course will cover instruction in basic bedside nursing skills, basic restorative skills, mental health and social service needs, personal care skills, and knowledge of client rights. Students will learn the knowledge and skills necessary to care for patients in long-term care and acute care facilities.

The Samaritan Nurse Assistant Program requires both time and a “personal caring” commitment from the students. Course completion depends on attendance and the ability to meet course objectives and requirements.

What is a Nursing Assistant?

Nursing assistants work under the supervision of a registered nurse and contribute to the delivery of patient care through direct and indirect contact with patients. Duties range from the care of a patient's daily personal needs to assisting with minor treatments.

Being a nursing assistant is a serious occupation where you are an important part of a health care team. This health care team may work in clinics, offices, within the home, extended care or acute care hospital settings.

How much does the program cost?

There is a $500 fee for the coures (includes textbook); other costs include uniforms, LBCC registration fee, criminal background check, immunizations, drug screening and testing fees.

Are there any prerequisites to the program?

Prior to starting the class participants must have completed and documented the following:

  • A high school diploma/GED
  • Tuberculosis test within last 12 months
  • Non-employee medical information form
  • Student confidentiality statement
  • Criminal background check
  • Current CPR card (American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer)
  • Drug screening

Students must also be able to meet physical requirements, engage in therapeutic communication, and deal with stressful interpersonal situations.

When are classes held?

Classes are held an average of two times per year, with expected start dates in January and July. For 2008, an additional class has been added that will start in September. The application deadline for the September course is June 27. Please read the application for more information.

Where are classes held?

Classes are held at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital in the Health Careers Center. The Health Careers Center is a joint effort between Linn Benton Community College and Samaritan Health Services. LBCC & SHS both utilize this new facility to house ongoing training programs.

Upon graduation, what certification do I receive?

Following successful completion of the course, a certificate of completion is awarded to the student. The student may then become officially certified by successfully completing the Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) certification exam. Candidates must submit an application to OSBN to take the test.
