Electrophysiology

Electrophysiology

Electrophysiology is a sub-specialty of cardiology focusing on diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities in the electrical impulses of the heart. Electrophysiology includes catheter studies of heart activity and the heart's responses to programmed electrical stimulation. These studies help physicians assess complex heart rhythms, clarify symptoms, design treatment and assess risk of developing arrhythmias in the future. Electrophysiology treatments include radiofrequency ablation, antiarrhythmic drug therapy and implantation of pacemakers and automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillators. Physicians specializing in this field are called electrophysiologists.
