Cholesterol Testing
Testing is offered seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the laboratory at SAGH located on the first floor. A total cholesterol count is offered for $10 and it ís not necessary to fast. For $15, we offer a total cholesterol count plus the HDL (the good) and LDL (the bad) subfractions, a triglycerides analysis, and a cardiac risk factor determination. A 12-hour fast is required for this test. You must be 15 years of age or older to take advantage of this offer. Results will be mailed to you. For an additional dollar, a diabetes screen can be added. A high cholesterol level is only one of the factors related to heart disease.
In a complete evaluation of your personal risk of this disease, your doctor would also consider information such as your age, sex, weight, smoking habits, family history, physical activity, and the presence of other conditions such as diabetes or hypertension (high blood pressure). And because it is not possible to diagnose or treat any disease or problem with these blood tests alone, nor are all disorders detected by these tests, we strongly urge you to have regular medical check ups and discuss any abnormal results with your personal physician.
