Central Sleep ApneaA non-obstructive form of sleep apnea can occur in patients with congestive heart disease, stroke, lung disease or be related to the use of strong pain medications. Central sleep apnea is characterized by waxing and waning breathing efforts in sleep, with periods of absence of breathing alternating with periods of vigorous breathing. Snoring and arousals often occur during the vigorous breathing efforts. The symptoms of snoring and daytime sleepiness can cause this sleep-related breathing disorder to be mistaken for obstructive sleep apnea until a sleep test is performed. |
