Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder defined by constant sleepiness and a tendency to have sleep attacks at inappropriate times. People with narcolepsy often have trouble staying awake during the day, but also can have trouble staying asleep at night. However, the sleepiness and tiredness of narcolepsy is not completely relieved by any amount of sleep. People with narcolepsy may also have symptoms of cataplexy (sudden loss of strength in muscles), or sleep paralysis with daytime naps. Symptoms of narcolepsy can appear all at once or develop gradually over time. If not appropriately managed, narcolepsy can drastically and negatively affect the quality of a person’s life.
