Pharmacists play a critical role in today’s health careMany people are not aware of the critical role their pharmacist plays in their health care. Pharmacists do more than fill prescriptions – they are experts on thousands of medications and make decisions that help maximize a patient’s drug therapy. Today’s medications are powerful and complex agents that must be used carefully to ensure a faster recovery and better health. Almost all drug-drug and drug-food interactions could be avoided by talking to your pharmacist. A pharmacist can also identify side effect or an allergic reaction you may be experiencing from a medication. A pharmacist can also use drug interaction software to check medications against each other for interactions – but only when your prescriptions are all filled at the same pharmacy. Using a single pharmacy also allows you to build a trusting relationship with your pharmacist.

Each Samaritan Health Services hospital has an inpatient pharmacy department to meet the needs of hospital and emergency room patients. In some locations, home health, hospice, ambulatory infusion and other programs receive their medications through the hospital pharmacy. The goal of the pharmacy staff is to ensure that patients receive the correct medications, and that medications are used responsibly throughout the system.
Access to affordable medication and quality pharmacy services is an important part of a community’s health care. Here are some of the pharmacy-related programs happening in our communities.
The Residency in Pharmacy Practice at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center teaches newly licensed pharmacists how to provide clinical pharmacy services. The program includes rotations in many areas of hospital and outpatient pharmacy practices. Click here for more information.
The Samaritan Medication Assistance Program provides over $250,000 per month of free prescription drugs to those who have no medication insurance and are unable to afford the cost of their medications. This program is only available to patients of Samaritan Health Services-affiliated providers. For more information call 800-255-8165.
Samaritan pharmacies in Corvallis and Albany provide over $16,000 per month of free prescription medication to patients of In-Reach clinic in Albany and Community Outreach clinic in Corvallis.
Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital is participating in the Rx Safe Program, a three-year study of a computerized medication tracking system. Participating pharmacies, hospitals, clinics and senior care facilities can see at a glance the prescription medication history of each patient. When fully operational, the system will reduce medication errors and adverse drug reactions.
Samaritan Health Services physician clinics and pharmacies are now distributing Personal Medication Information cards to help patients keep track of their current medications. The Personal Medical Information card is a chart to help you and your family members keep a current record of information that physicians need to know to ensure safe and complete medical treatment. This record includes immunizations, allergies, prescribed medications, and any vitamins, herbal supplements or over-the-counter medicines. Click here for more information.
