What happens in a sleep disorders center? If your physician suspects you have a sleeping disorder, you may be referred to one of The Corvallis Clinic sleep physicians. He or she will review your sleep and medical history with you and decide how to evaluate and treat your particular sleep problem. Some patients may be diagnosed and have a treatment plan from an office visit alone. If the sleep physician needs even more information, you may be scheduled for an overnight study in the Sleep Disorders Center, located in Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, or the Sleep Lab located in Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport. During your stay, a professional sleep technician will place small sensors on various parts of your body. The sensors are painless, non-restrictive and allow you to move about and change sleeping positions as often as you like. While you are sleeping, information about your brain activity, quality of sleep, eye movements, muscle tone and other aspects of breathing will be recorded in a nearby control room. A see-in-the-dark video camera will also record any body movements as you sleep. The next morning, a sleep physician will meet with you to explain the results and possible treatment recommendations. Usually, one night in the lab is all that is required for a diagnosis. A second night may be recommended to evaluate the results of treatment. |
