Other Sleep-Related Breathing DisordersOther breathing disorders that may occur during sleep are those in which the airway remains open, but the chest and abdominal muscles do a less efficient job in aiding breathing. This results in abnormally shallow breathing (hypoventilation), which causes high carbon dioxide and low oxygen levels throughout the body during sleep. Severe sleep hypoventilation may occur in several medical disorders, including Post-Polio Syndrome, Muscular Dystrophy and Pickwickian Syndrome (which may occur in people with disorders of weight control that cause them to become extremely overweight). |
