Trauma Care

Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center is one of three “Level 2” trauma centers in the state of Oregon. The hospital received the upgraded designation in 2003, after an on-site survey by the Oregon Health Division. The hospital was previously categorized as a Level 3 trauma center.

There are four levels of trauma care provided in the statewide system, and each hospital’s trauma designation helps direct emergency medical personnel to the appropriate level of care. The other two Level 2 centers are located in Eugene and Bend. Both Level 1 trauma centers are in Portland.

In evaluating trauma care at hospitals, state surveyors review specific cases and assess the available staff, equipment, training, continuing education offerings, quality improvement processes and community outreach activities. After surveying Good Samaritan’s program, state officials complimented the physicians and staff on the quality of the program.

“Good Samaritan has one of the best trauma centers seen by these reviewers in all their years of trauma surveys,” Health Division officials said in a letter announcing the survey results. “The level of total commitment and dedication to trauma care is evident in every aspect of the trauma program and in the facility’s level of support. From the physical plant and supplies to education and the QI program, Good Samaritan demonstrates excellence in trauma care.”

Trauma Program Manager Bobbie O’Connell said: “The survey is a retrospective review of patient care, and the results reflect a natural evolution of Good Samaritan as a regional medical center. Because we provide our best in trauma care, patients are more likely to survive and receive treatment promptly, instead of having to be transferred to another facility.”
