Hospice is a philosophy of care for people in the last stages of a terminal illness such as cancer or emphysema. Hospice does not hasten death. It affirms life and regards dying as a normal process. Whenever possible, hospice patients stay in the familiar surroundings of their own homes, in an atmosphere of dignity and support for the patient and the family. We recognize these special needs of the dying:
Our staff and volunteers support patients and family members through the final stages of illness. Ongoing contact and support for the family is offered through our bereavement program.
Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, most commercial and private health insurance plans, and by worker’s compensation. Our staff can assist you with insurance coverage information.
Hospice volunteer training is available for those interested in learning more about volunteering to support terminally ill patients and their families. Volunteers help hospice patients by assisting them for a few hours each week. Our service area Samaritan Hospice Services has three locations serving patients and families in Benton, Linn and Lincoln counties, and portions of Polk, Marion, and Tillamook counties.
