Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The pulmonary rehabilitation programs offered through Samaritan Health Services are designed to help people with chronic lung disease. As you learn more about lung disease and increase your stamina through exercise, you will breathe easier and enjoy the everyday as well as special activities in your life. These programs combine exercise and education in sessions meeting two times a week, for a period of six to eight weeks.

Pulmonary rehabilitation benefits

We work with you to improve your quality of life through:
• Decreasing respiratory symptoms and complications
• Improving self management and control over daily activities
• Optimizing physical condition and exercise performance
• Improving emotional well being
• Reducing hospital stays

Exercise

We develop a specialized exercise program for you. During these one-hour exercise sessions, we monitor blood oxygen levels, blood pressure, heart rate and shortness of breath.

Education

Education is a very important component of pulmonary rehabilitation. You will learn about:
• Anatomy and physiology
• Lung diseases
• Medications
• Living with lung disease
• Relaxation and stress reduction
• Nutrition and weight control
• Breath retraining and exercises
• Psychological and social issues related to lung disease

Preadmission evaluation

Pulmonary rehabilitation is not for everyone. Your motivation to work hard and become more active is an important criteria for program admission. A preadmission evaluation allows you to better understand the program and set goals.

Certain tests may be necessary before beginning this program, including:
• Resting electrocardiogram
• Stress test for participants with a history of heart problems
• Lung function tests
• Arterial blood gases
• Blood chemistry panel
• Blood count

Maintenance

After completing pulmonary rehabilitation, you should continue exercise to retain the gain made during rehabilitation.

Insurance coverage

Pulmonary rehabilitation has varying levels of coverage by Medicare and most insurance plans. Our staff will work with your physician to obtain the written referral authorization and information regarding your individual medical history and needs.

Our staff

A team of health care professionals evaluates each participant’s overall physical and emotional status. They will then design a program to meet individual needs and goals, and help patients to make lasting lifestyle changes.

Our staff includes:

• Medical director
• Registered respiratory therapists
• Registered nurses
• Exercise physiologists
