Nutrition ServicesProgram OverviewBecause nutrition plays a critical role in overall health, Lebanon Community Hospital has developed a full-service Nutrition Services Department. It is staffed by registered, licensed dietitians, who work with patients individually and in group settings to help them develop healthy eating patterns. Why is healthy eating so important? Because what, when, how often and how much you eat directly affects your ability to avoid or manage illness. Our dietitians can help you manage heart disease and diabetes, for example. They can show you how to lose weight safely after a pregnancy or how to maintain bone strength throughout your life. They can help you plan meals to lower blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugars and ensure that all vitamin/mineral needs are met; and they can show you how to adopt eating habits that will help prevent diseases, such as cancer. The dietitians at Lebanon Community Hospital have received their credentialing through the State of Oregon's Board of Examiners of Licensed Dietitians. That means they are professionals, who have earned a bachelor's degree in foods, nutrition or a related science, and who have successfully completed a dietetic internship in an accredited hospital. It also means they have passed a national examination, and they regularly meet mandatory requirements for continuing education. In other words, you can feel confident working with LCH dietitians. They'll steer you away from possibly dangerous, expensive and/or misleading nutrition advice. Instead, they'll lead you to sensible nutrition advice that will serve you well throughout every stage of your life. Inpatient Nutrition ServicesLCH dietitians will screen inpatients (those who are patients within the hospital) for nutrition risk. Depending on the results of the screenings, dietitians may prepare meal plans for patients to use at home, or they might counsel people on the vitamin/mineral content of specific foods, or on how to get enough protein and calories to help heal wounds. They might educate people on how particular foods affect diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and acid reflux. Home Health ConsultationsAt the request of physicians and/or Home Health nurses, dietitians may visit Home Health patients to help them with their nutritional needs. Outpatient Nutrition CounselingLCH dietitians work closely with area physicians to help people maintain optimal health. With a doctor's referral, dietitians can help people maintain heart health and set individual goals for managing conditions, including diabetes, elevated cholesterol, obesity, kidney disease, pulmonary disorders, cancers and more. They also can pass on tips for meal planning, grocery shopping, label reading, and preparing low-fat and low-salt meals. Community Education ClassesThe LCH Nutrition Services Department regularly offers classes on a wide variety of topics. They include Diabetes Management classes, "Healthy Eating" workshops, grocery-shopping tours and food demonstrations. Diabetes NewsletterFour times a year, the Nutrition Services Department, together with the hospital's Diabetes Department, publishes Diabetes News.
