Intensive Care
The Intensive Care Unit is designed for the cardiac or critically ill patients who can be observed from a centralized nursing station with sophisticated monitoring equipment. A registered nurse trained in advanced cardiac life support is on duty at all times in the ICU. If a family member calls the unit and no one answers this means the nurse is busy with a patient, so please try again. ICU visitors. Visitors are asked to observe the following guidelines.
- Usually only immediate family and clergy may visit, but exceptions may be made for your friends. Usually children under 12 years old may not visit.
- Visits are limited to two persons for 10 minutes each hour and additionally visitors may wait in the lobby. One family member, such as a spouse, usually may stay longer, depending on the patient's condition.
- Visitors should call the ICU from red telephone outside the door before entering the unit.
- Families are encouraged to designate one spokesperson to keep the family informed. That person may phone the unit any time for a report on the patient's condition.
- Families should take unnecessary belongings and valuables home for safekeeping.
- Flowers and candy are not permitted in the ICU.
- A Quiet Room is available for use by families of patients in critical condition or for a conference with the patient's physician.
