Hospice Services

What is Hospice?

Hospice is a philosophy of care for people in the last stages of a terminal illness such as cancer or emphysema. Hospice does not hasten death. It affirms life and regards dying as a normal process. Whenever possible, hospice patients stay in the familiar surroundings of their own homes, in an atmosphere of dignity and support for the patient and the family. The patient’s own physician continues to direct all of the medical care provided by our hospice staff.

What services does Hospice offer?

Our dedicated hospice team of professionals help the patient and family by offering:

  • skilled nursing care (24 hour on-call nursing services available)
  • pain management
  • medical social services and counseling
  • spiritual support
  • home health aides
  • trained hospice volunteers
  • bereavement support
  • medication and equipment as appropriate
  • stress management

Who should use Hospice?

Hospice assists people of all ages who are under the care of a physician. Hospice is for people who:

  • have a terminal diagnosis with a life expectancy of six months or less
  • have approval of their attending physician who continues to direct all care
  • are seeking comfort care rather than curative treatment

We recognize these special needs of the dying:

  • relief from pain and discomfort
  • to be close to loved ones
  • quality of life for the patient and family
  • bereavement support for family

Our staff and volunteers support patients and family members through the final stages of illness. Ongoing contact and support for the family is offered through our bereavement program.

Billing

Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, most commercial and private health insurance plans, and by worker’s compensation. Our staff can assist you with insurance coverage information.

Become a Hospice volunteer

Hospice volunteer training is available for those interested in learning more about volunteering to support terminally ill patients and their families. Volunteers help hospice patients by assisting them for a few hours each week. Our service area Samaritan Hospice Services has three locations serving patients and families in Benton, Linn and Lincoln counties, and portions of Polk, Marion, and Tillamook counties.
