Patients in need of total ankle replacement now have a local option for care. Jason Lin, MD, of Samaritan Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, performs total ankle replacement surgery in Corvallis and is accepting referrals.
Total ankle replacement surgery is an option for people who have a severely damaged ankle joint and suffer from pain and loss of movement of the ankle. Some causes of damage to the ankle may include trauma, fracture, infection, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
Patients will need to go through a screening process and meet a set of criteria in order to be cleared for the surgery. Criteria include:
- Being a non-smoker
- Having good circulation
- Having no history of peripheral arterial disease; and
- No history of ankle joint infections
Prior to surgery, patients are also evaluated to determine if non-operative options such as injections, weight loss, bracing or anti-inflammatory medications are more suitable.
A typical recovery includes staying off the ankle for six weeks followed by physical therapy. Most patients are walking and pain-free within 10 to 12 weeks of surgery. The majority of ankle replacements will last 10 years or longer.
