Surgeon Melissa deWolfe, DO, MPH, Joins Samaritan

Samaritan Surgical Specialists – Newport is pleased to welcome surgeon Melissa deWolfe, DO, MPH. She is a general surgeon, specializing in upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, open and laparoscopic procedures such as hernia repair and gallbladder removal, and also acute care surgery for problems such as appendicitis or bowel obstruction.

Dr. deWolfe earned a bachelor’s degree from Haverford College, a medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and a master’s degree in public health from East Carolina University.  She completed residency training at Vidant Medical Center (formerly Pitt County Memorial Hospital).

Dr. deWolfe is a third-generation doctor; her father and grandfather were also physicians.

“I grew up in a small town and witnessed my dad interact with his patients. I saw first-hand how many people he helped and how rewarding his job was,” she said.

Now she finds her work as a surgeon just as rewarding.

“Surgery is unique because it allows us to not only diagnosis problems, but also to fix or cure problems in a way that makes such a difference in our patients’ lives,” she said.

Dr. deWolfe has a holistic approach to care.

“I consider all aspects of my patients’ health when preparing them for surgery. In this way, we can achieve the best possible outcomes,” she said.

She is excited to join Samaritan and to be surrounded by people who share her values of teamwork, cooperation and compassionate patient care.

When away from the office, Dr. deWolfe enjoys yoga, reading and outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking and taking her dog for walks on the beach.

Dr. deWolfe is accepting new patients. She can be reached by calling 541-574-4795.
