Class Promotes Disability Awareness & Empathy in Children

How can parents practice and model a philosophy emphasizing that all children are special in their own way?

Parents of children ages 5 to 12 are invited to attend a free, virtual session to explore ways to talk with their children about disability awareness, empathy, learning from individual differences and building friendships.

The free, one-session workshop will take place Tuesday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 7  p.m. It will be presented by Richard Halpern, who has more than 25 years of experience working with families. He teaches parenting education in Multnomah County and is a certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator.

Topics at this session will include:

  • What is ableism and inherent bias?
  • Talking to children about disabilities.
  • Activities to promote empathy.
  • Advocating for unique learners at home and at school.

Participants must have access to an internet device with camera and microphone and will receive a Zoom link and password at time of registration. For more information and to register, contact Sommer McLeish.

The class is sponsored by Parenting Success Network and Samaritan Health Services.
