Four Reasons to Try Vascular Cosmetic Treatment

There’s a growing desire to look and feel our best.

According to a report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there were more than 26 million surgical, and cosmetic and reconstructive procedures performed in the United States in 2022.

This includes vascular cosmetic treatments for rosacea, spider veins, enlarged vessels, angiomas and acnes scars using laser care, chemical peels and microneedling.

Karin Olszewski, RN, who provides medical cosmetic services at Samaritan Plastic, Reconstructive & Hand Surgery in Corvallis, shares some of the top reasons for the appeal of these treatments.

1. Improve Your Physical Appearance

Healthy skin is more than looking good. It’s about feeling your best. Although there isn’t a medical need to address cosmetic concerns, people who’ve had these procedures report an improved quality of life and sense of wellbeing.

“Vascular cosmetic treatments are used to improve physical appearance,” said Olszewski. “These treatments are backed by research measuring patient satisfaction.”

2. Treatments Are Effective & Convenient

At Samaritan Plastic, Reconstructive & Hand Surgery, a pulsed-dye laser is used to treat redness. During treatment, the laser delivers light energy to abnormal veins below the skin’s surface, which are dissolved and reabsorbed by the body.

“The laser is very effective at fading many vascular issues and most people report minimal discomfort,” Olszewski said. “It’s also a relatively quick treatment.”

3. Results Are Fast & Can Be Lasting

For smaller areas or cherry angiomas (skin growth), a single treatment may be all that is needed, and the result will be apparent within six weeks. For larger areas and other conditions, it may take several treatments spaced four to six weeks apart.

Results from laser treatment can last years. To protect against new damage, always wear sunscreen, even indoors and when it is cloudy.

Following laser treatment, receiving peels or microneedling for maintenance can also diminish the reappearance of the problems that caused redness.

However, if reddening is caused by rosacea, there are several underlying reasons for why it appears and when someone is prone to getting it. Because rosacea does recur, additional treatments may be needed.

“We just keep it at bay as much as we can,” Olszewski said.

4. You Can Skip Heavy Makeup

Many people rely on makeup to minimize the appearance of redness. People who’ve had aesthetic treatments often tell Olszewski about not having to hide their redness.

“They will comment that they don’t need to wear heavy makeup anymore,” she said. “This is a huge relief to them.”
