Health Education Scholarships

One of the many keys to maintaining a healthy, prosperous community is ensuring a sustainable supply of excellent health care providers. To achieve this, Samaritan Health Services offers numerous scholarships to local students pursuing careers as doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, as well continuing education or specialty training for current medical providers.

Each year, Samaritan awards more than $25,000 in scholarships for health care education to ensure the communities we serve receive the best care possible well into the future.

Scholarship Opportunities for Benton, Lincoln & Linn Counties

The following scholarship opportunities are available to residents in the three counties Samaritan serves. Scholarships are offered without regard to race, religion, national origin, gender, age, color, disability, or marital status. Please carefully review the application and criteria for each scholarship opportunity to ensure your eligibility.

Larry A. Mullins, DHA, Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,000+

Application Due Date: April 1, 2026

The Larry A. Mullins, DHA, Endowed Scholarship for Health Care Education scholarship was established in 2003 by the board of directors of Samaritan Health Services, Corvallis, Oregon. It was formed in honor of Dr. Mullins, the President/CEO of Samaritan Health Services (now retired), upon the completion of his doctoral degree in health care administration (DHA) from the Medical University of South Carolina.

Nursing Excellence Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,000+

Application Due Date: April 1, 2026

The Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Nursing Excellence Scholarship was established in 2013 in honor/memory of outstanding Registered Nurses (RNs) at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, Oregon.

The Nursing Excellence Scholarship is available to eligible students pursuing RN, BSN or MSN degrees who show leadership and clinical expertise and excellence. At least one scholarship is awarded for tuition, books and school fees.

Jeanne Hazleton Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,000+

Application Due Date: April 1, 2026

The Jeanne Hazleton Scholarship for Midwifery and Doula Education was established in 2008 by Patrick Hazleton, husband of the late Jeanne Hazleton, and funded by numerous contributions made by family and friends. The purpose of the Jeanne Hazleton Scholarship Fund is to honor Jeanne’s lifetime service and contribution to the community as a practicing doula and midwife and to encourage women to enter or continue their education in the birthing profession. The scholarship program is designed to help residents of Benton, Lincoln and Linn counties begin or continue their education for doula and/or midwife training, certification or licensing.

John C. Erkkila, MD, Endowment

Award Amount: $25,000

Application Due Date: Jan. 1, 2026

Your organization or department is invited to submit funding proposals for the John C. Erkkila, M.D. Endowment for Health and Human Performance. Established in 1994 through a series of gifts from Ralph Hull of Monroe, the endowment is managed by the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation in Corvallis. The fund currently holds assets exceeding $1 million, and individual grants of up to $25,000 are awarded annually.

Before submitting a full proposal, applicants must submit a 250-word abstract for approval. Please email your abstract to [email protected] by Jan. 1, 2026.

Benton County

Health Care Professionals

Virginia Welch Scholarship

Award Amount: At least one scholarship is awarded for tuition, books and school fees. 

Each year the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Auxiliary awards the Virginia Welch Scholarship to students planning to pursue a career in a medically-related field. The scholarship is named in honor of Virginia Welch, a head nurse who became Good Samaritan’s administrator in 1951 and served until 1967. To date, more than $277,000 has been awarded to students pursuing a career in health care.

High school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in, or accepted to, a program to pursue a career in a medically-related field in a hospital setting are eligible to apply.

Lincoln County

Nursing Students

Gribler Loving Trust Nursing Education Scholarship

Award Amount: $3,000

Application Due Date: July, 2026

Each year, the Pacific Communities Health District Foundation awards the Gribler Loving Trust Nursing Education Scholarship to three students who live in Lincoln County, are pursuing a degree in nursing and who intend to practice in the community when they graduate. Up to $3,000 is awarded to each student and students who receive the scholarship are eligible to apply for a second year.

The scholarship is awarded in honor of Bill and Olga Gribler, Newport residents since 1947. Bill taught music, providing entertainment throughout the community, and Olga worked for the phone company and later the Bank of Newport. They established this generous scholarship to help address the ongoing need for quality nurses in the region.

Health Care Professionals

Mary Decker Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,500

Application Due Date: April 1, 2026

The North Lincoln Hospital Foundation is honored to offer scholarships to aspiring health care professionals who live in Lincoln County. The Mary Decker Scholarship Fund was created in 2006 with the support of many friends and colleagues in the health care community and the North Lincoln Health District Board. The intent is to honor and recognize Mary’s many years of service to her community and the state by providing scholarships to further career development in health care. The fund provides scholarships for qualified applicants to pursue a degree in a medical or paramedical field at an accredited school of their choice.

North Lincoln Hospital Foundation Medical Training Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,500

Application Due Date: April 1, 2026

The North Lincoln Hospital Foundation is committed to supporting the growth and development of healthcare professionals. Through the Medical Training Scholarship program, eligible applicants can receive up to $1,500 to help cover tuition costs for certification programs or degrees in nursing, diagnostic imaging, laboratory sciences, and other medical or technical fields.  

Linn County

Nursing Students

Nurse Education Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,000

Application Due Date: May 29, 2026

Caregivers and certified nursing assistants who are pursuing continued education in the nursing field are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to applicants from the Lebanon area and single parents.

Medical Students

Frank Girod, MD, Medical Scholarship

Award Amount: $5,000

Application Due Date: April 30, 2026

The Frank Girod, MD, Medical Scholarship was established by the Lebanon Community Hospital Development Council and was funded by numerous contributions made by the late Girod’s friends and family.

The Girod Medical Scholarship is awarded to medical students in honor of the lifetime contribution to health care made by Girod of Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital and to assist new students of medicine to make similar contributions. The scholarship is coordinated by the Lebanon Community Hospital Foundation and is designed to help residents of east Linn County who are attending medical school.

Julietta A. Pape Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,000

Application Due Date: April 30, 2026

The Julietta A. Pape Scholarship Fund was designed to help residents of Brownsville, Cascadia, Crabtree, Crawfordsville, Foster, Halsey, Lacomb, Lebanon, Scio, Shedd, Sweet Home, Tangent and Waterloo who are attending medical school. Applicants must be attending College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest in Lebanon or Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland.

Health Care Professionals

Samaritan Albany General Hospital Volunteer Services Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,000

Application Due Date: March

Linn County students currently attending college and majoring in a medical field are invited to apply for the Samaritan Albany General Hospital $1,000 Volunteer Services Scholarship. Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship

Award Amount: $1,000

Application Due Date: Feb. 19, 2026

East Linn County students currently attending college and majoring in a medical field are invited to apply for the Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital $1,000 Auxiliary Scholarship. Applications are accepted in January and February, and five scholarships are awarded in March each year.

John & Carol Dinges Medical Scholarship

Award Amount: $7,000

Application Due Date: April 30, 2026

High school seniors and graduates from east Linn County who are enrolled in an entry level health care program at Linn-Benton Community College for the first time, are invited to apply for this scholarship.

Scholarship Opportunities for Samaritan Employees

Continuing education scholarships are available through several of Samaritan’s hospital foundations and auxiliaries.

Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center – James R. Mol Scholarship

The Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Auxiliary offers the James R. Mol Continuing Education Scholarship to corporate or Good Samaritan employees seeking career-related educational opportunities.

This continuous scholarship fund is available to regular full-time and part-time employees (0.5 FTE or more). Applicants are encouraged to apply at least three weeks before the start of an educational opportunity and include a reference letter from their department manager or supervisor. The education must support their current role or a professional interest in which the applicant is employed or involved.

Samaritan Albany General Hospital – Employee Scholarship Program

The Albany General Hospital Foundation Employee Scholarship program helps cover an employee’s expenses for conferences, seminars, trainings or certification exams during the year. These scholarships are made possible through the generosity of donors, as well as employees who give through the Samaritan Employee Caring Campaign. Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital – Employee Scholarship Program

Award Amount: $800

The Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital Auxiliary offers five grants yearly, up to $800 each, to eligible employees pursuing education to further their career in a medically related field.
