Also known as an arm lift, brachioplasty is a surgical procedure that contours and reshapes the upper arm from the underarm to the elbow. It is frequently performed due to sagging of the skin and fat of the upper arm due to aging, heredity, or significant fluctuations in weight. This area is seldom responsive to exercise and toning due to loss of the elastic properties of skin in the area.

Brachioplasty with or without liposuction may be right for you if you are healthy, at a stable weight, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations regarding appearance and scars. The results of brachioplasty will be long-lasting provided that you maintain a stable weight and general fitness.

Breast augmentation surgery entails placement of a breast implant to increase the volume and projection of the breasts, and sometimes to enhance symmetry in the breasts. It is most frequently performed in women whose breasts are naturally small, women who have lost volume in the breasts following pregnancy and breastfeeding, and women who have lost breast volume with weight loss. The operation carries a high overall satisfaction rate.

Implant options include saline breast implants and silicone breast implants. Silicone breast implants were temporarily removed from the market by the FDA in the 1990s over health concerns if they rupture. However, extensive and rigorous scientific studies have proven they are safe, even in the setting of implant shell rupture.

You may be a good candidate for this procedure if you are healthy, do not smoke, are at least 18 years of age or older and do not have a history of breast cancer. If you desire silicone gel breast implants, you must be 22 years of age or older according to FDA guidelines. If you are over the age of 40 and have not had a mammogram or are under 40 with a strong family history of breast cancer, you may need to undergo a screening mammogram prior to augmentation.

Breast lift surgery, also called Mastopexy, is the surgical repositioning of breast tissue, the nipple and areola (the colored portion around the nipple) to reshape the breast into a more youthful contour. With time, gravity, pregnancy and breastfeeding, or extreme fluctuations in weight, the breast may take on a drooping appearance. Breast lift surgery can reposition the nipple and areola higher on the chest, restore fullness and projection, and create a more youthful appearance. It accomplishes this through the removal of excess breast skin, tightening the surrounding tissue and resuspending breast tissue higher on the chest wall. Mastopexy can be combined with augmentation using a breast implant if you desire more volume and fullness in addition to a lift. Sometimes this technique requires a staged procedure to minimize risk of complications.

In the United States, roughly one out of every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The current standard of care for most breast cancers is surgical removal of either part of the involved breast, or the entire breast. This often results in disfiguring surgical defects. The reconstruction of the breast can be achieved through several techniques. These include the use of breast implants; the use of your own tissues from the back, belly or buttocks; breast reduction techniques for lumpectomy; and fat grafting. While the reconstructed breast will never have the same sensation or exact appearance of the native breast, it can potentially achieve a normal appearance in clothing or swimwear and a good appearance without clothing.

We are proud to offer the full spectrum of breast reconstructive options including implant reconstructions, fat grafting for contour corrections in breast reconstruction or with lumpectomy defects, and nipple reconstruction. The initial reconstruction can frequently be performed at the same time as your breast cancer surgery. In the setting of a one-sided mastectomy, breast lift or augmentation can be performed on the native opposite side to achieve symmetry.

Our board certified surgeons are well experienced with multiple breast reconstructive techniques and find it profoundly rewarding and humbling to help you through your cancer treatment journey. We work closely with your surgical, medical and radiation oncology team to provide you with the optimal care in both your cancer treatment and your return to feeling whole again.

Breast reduction surgery, alternately known as reduction mammaplasty, is the removal of excess breast tissue and skin of the breasts to reduce neck and shoulder strain, allow a more proportioned breast to body size, and to allow more comfortable physical activity. Very large breasts can lead to grooving in the shoulders by bra straps, numbness in the arms and shoulders by compression of nerves by the bra strap, skin irritation under the breast and self-consciousness in public. In addition to removal of excess weight in the breasts, breast reduction surgery also lifts the breast tissue on the chest wall so the remaining tissue is better supported by the ribcage.

Under certain conditions, your insurance will cover breast reduction surgery. They may require a certain volume be removed as well as proof that conservative measures have failed to relieve symptoms. These may include appropriately fitted supportive bras, physical therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture or weight loss. It should be noted that breast reduction surgery is not weight loss surgery and may not be right for you if your breasts are large due to being overweight.

You may be a good candidate for breast reduction surgery if:

  • your breasts are very large relative to the size of the rest of your body.
  • you are physically healthy.
  • you experience any of the associated symptoms of having large breasts, including: neck and back strain, grooving of the shoulders, skin irritation with yeast infections and skin breakdown under the breasts, decreased exercise tolerance and numbness in the arms and shoulders.
  • you do not have a history of breast disease.
  • you do not smoke.

In certain instances, breast tissue in men can become overdeveloped and lead to a more feminine breast contour. This can be due to abnormalities in natural hormone production, side effects of illicit or prescription drugs and/or vitamin supplements, or breast disease. Frequently, however, there is no identifiable cause. Multiple treatment options exist depending on the degree of breast enlargement. Liposuction alone may suffice. For larger breast size, surgery through an incision at the areola (the colored portion around the nipple) may be required. In the rare case of an extreme increase in size, a breast reduction similar to those performed on women may be required.

Sometimes the surgery is covered by insurance. If it is a covered benefit under your plan, we will bill insurance as indicated for the procedure. In the event it is not covered, we are happy to provide you with an itemized estimate regarding cost.

Patient 1

21-year-old male with gynecomastia (enlarged breast tissue).
Procedure:  Double mastectomy with free nipple grafts. (In a free nipple graft the nipple is removed and reattached as a skin graft).

Pre and post surgery results of 21-year-old male with gynecomastia and after breast reduction surgery.

You may be a good candidate for gynecomastia reduction if you are nearly or completely through puberty, underlying hormone abnormalities have been ruled out, are otherwise healthy, do not smoke and have realistic expectations about results.

You may need to undergo evaluation by an endocrinologist, a physician who specializes in hormones and glands, to rule out a hormonal cause for breast enlargement. Depending on your age and/or if the enlargement is asymmetric, you may be referred for a screening mammogram.

Eyelid lift surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is performed for cosmetic purposes or occasionally to treat obstruction of the field of view due to drooping of the upper eyelids. Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can be used to correct puffiness, loose sagging skin, eyelid wrinkles, bags under the eyes and droopiness of the eyelids.

You may be a good candidate for blepharoplasty if you are healthy and a non-smokers who does not have pre-existing problems with their eyes. You may need an exam with an eye doctor before pursuing eyelid surgery. In instances of blepharoplasty to treat limited field of view, insurance may sometimes cover the cost of surgery. The incisions are placed inconspicuously within the lash line, inside the eyelid or within natural eyelid creases.

A common characteristic of the aging face is deepened frown lines and furrows in the forehead and eyebrow area. This can be accompanied by a lower position of the eyebrows and a heavy appearance of the eyebrows and upper eyelids. Brow lift surgery reduces the deep lines and creases in the forehead, and elevates the brow to a more youthful position. The procedure is often done in conjunction with eyelid surgery and/or facelift surgery to create a more youthful appearance.

You may be a good candidate for brow lift surgery if you are a healthy, non-smoker with moderate to deep forehead lines and creases. The procedure can be done in minimally invasive fashion through small hairline incisions that remain well hidden and inconspicuous. The results of brow lift surgery tend to be long lasting.

With aging, characteristic changes occur to the skin and supportive connective tissues of the face. This leads to descent of skin causing formation of jowls, a more sunken appearance to the cheeks, and formation of creases and wrinkles in the skin. Facelift surgery corrects these signs of aging by not only tightening the skin of the face but also by re-elevating the underlying supportive tissues of the face to a more youthful position.

A neck lift is typically included in the procedure. Additional adjunctive procedures may include fat grafting, eyelid surgery or brow surgery to create a harmonious youthful appearance for your entire face. Facelift surgery is not meant to change how you look, rather it works to “roll back the clock” making you look like yourself 10 to 15 years ago.

You may be a good candidate for facelift surgery if you are healthy, do not smoke, and have specific and realistic expectations regarding recovery and appearance. While facelift surgery can restore a more youthful appearance, it cannot completely half the aging process.

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is surgery performed on the external and internal structures of the nose to improve appearance and proportion and/or correct impaired breathing due to structural abnormalities. For cosmetic concerns, rhinoplasty is able to change the size of the nose and alter the width of the nose at the nasal bridge. It can also be used to change the nose profile with correction of humps or depressions and alter the nasal tip if it is too bulbous, too pinched, drooping or upturned. Nasal asymmetry may also be corrected.

Structural abnormalities due to trauma or congenital internal defects can be corrected with rhinoplasty surgery. Difficulty breathing through the nose can result from deviation of the nasal septum (the division between the nostrils), abnormal overgrowth of bony structures in the nasal cavity or cartilage abnormalities. These procedures may be covered by your insurance but may also require specific preoperative diagnostic testing.

You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you are healthy, your facial growth is complete (usually age 13 or older), you do not smoke and you have specific, realistic goals in mind for the improvement in your appearance.

Thigh lift surgery is performed to improve the contour, shape and skin tightness of the thighs. Loss of the elastic properties of the skin with aging, fluctuations in weight, or genetic factors may lead to loss of tightness in the skin and fatty tissues of the thighs. Thigh lift surgery can correct this, resulting in smoother skin and a more youthful contour to the thighs.

You may be a good candidate for thigh lift surgery if you are at a stable weight, health, do not smoke, and have realistic goals regarding the improvement in the appearance of your thighs. While fat is usually removed with thigh lift surgery, it is not a substitute for weight loss and a healthy lifestyle.

Liposuction (alternately known as lipoplasty) is a minimally invasive technique to remove fat deposits under the skin and improve body contour and shape. Often, even in spite of good health and fitness, some people maintain disproportionate deposits of fat that are difficult to correct through diet and exercise alone. They can be due to family traits or genetics and may occur in the abdomen and waist, thighs, hips, buttocks, arms, back, chest, cheeks and chin, or the calves and ankles.

Liposuction can be used alone for body contouring or in conjunction with other body contouring procedures. You may be a good candidate if your skin quality is good, you are not overweight, and you have stubborn areas of fat excess that don’t respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction is not a good option for weight loss nor is it a good option to correct “cellulite,” which is the dimpled appearance of the skin that frequently occurs over the hips, thighs and buttocks.

Abdominoplasty is a procedure aimed at removing excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen along with tightening and restoring weakened or separated muscles of the abdominal wall. Situations such as pregnancy, aging, fluctuations in weight, heredity and prior surgery may lead to excess loose, sagging skin of the lower abdomen as well as weakening of the abdominal wall musculature and loss of the “hourglass” shape of youth.

Abdominoplasty is a good option if you are physically healthy and at a stable weight, you do not smoke, and prior abdominal surgery do not put you at risk for surgical complications. It should be noted that abdominoplasty is not a substitute for weight loss, though it can remove excess abdominal fat. Additionally, while some stretch marks of the lower abdomen may be removed with abdominoplasty, it is not guaranteed to completely eliminate all post-pregnancy or post-weight loss stretch marks.
