Hats for Babies Raise Awareness

Calling All Knitters!

If you love to knit, you can use your passion to make a difference by raising awareness for health issues affecting babies.

Each year, Samaritan hospitals receive knitted hats in a variety of styles in the colors purple and red. Knitted by loving volunteers, each hat is meant to raise awareness for the Period of Purple Crying or Heart Health.

Get Involved

If you, or a knitting group, would like volunteer to knit or crochet infant hats, here are a few things to remember:

  • Simple hat patterns only please. Bows, buttons and accessories can pose a safety hazard to little ones.
  • Purple hats are collected April through Dec. Hats can be dropped off at the front desk at any Samaritan Hospital. Please contact Joni Scholz, SHS perinatal educator, at 541-768-6460 for questions.
  • Red hats are collected Nov. 11 through Jan. 11. Please send all knitted hats to the following address:
    American Heart Association
    Attn: Little Hats, Big Hearts
4380 SW Macadam Ave., Suite 480
    Portland, OR 97239
  • Hat patterns can be found at Click for Babies or Little Hats, Big Hearts.
