Preventing the Flu

Ways to prevent the flu include washing your hands often, covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, frequently cleaning surfaces that are touched a lot, and staying home when you are sick.

For influenza, we are fortunate to have vaccines that help prevent the illness, and most health insurance plans completely cover the cost of flu vaccines, including the Oregon Health Plan and the InterCommunity Health Network CCO. (Check with your health insurance provider if you are not sure.)

Preventing the flu is always important, and flu vaccines help save lives every year. Doing everything you can to prevent the flu will:

  • Help you avoid an illness that could cause you to miss work or other activities.
  • Help keep people who are more vulnerable to the flu safer, such as adults age 65 and over, children younger than 2, pregnant women and Indigenous Americans.
