Prior to joining Samaritan Family Medicine, Dr. Hughes was in private practice in Virginia. In 1992, Dr. Hughes was a recipient of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute research grant in microbiology. In 1993, he researched leukemia as part of a thesis in experimental pathophysiology at The Roswell Park Cancer institute in Buffalo, New York.

Dr. Hughes is affiliated with the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Osteopathic Association. He strongly believes that physical activity, diet and state of mind are of paramount importance in maintaining overall health, and returning to health from disease. He also encourages patients to become experts in their medical care, to understand how daily choices affect their health, and to take responsibility for their health.
